Broccoli, cabbage, and kai lan are all cultivars of Brassica oleracea (wild cabbage). Throughout the centuries, farmers from all across the globe have artificially selected plants of this species that exhibited specific features. For example, farmers who selected plants with enlarged flowering structures led to the cultivation of cauliflowers. Other vegetables that are also cultivars of B. oleracea are kohlrabi, kale and Brussels sprouts.
