The coelacanths belong to an ancient order which is more related to amphibians. The coelacanth was thought to have gone extinct 66 million years ago, until a living specimen belonging to the order was discovered in 1938. They are called as living fossils because they seem to have undergone very minimal changes from the prehistoric times.
