Bats play an essential role in controlling the insect population in the rainforest and our agricultural plantations. Each night, when a giant colony of bats flutters into the sky, it consumes thousands of pounds of mosquitoes and agricultural pests. Some species of bats can eat half their body weight in bugs each night. That’s about 3,000 insects a night! Every night they fly out to feed, each eating at least 10 grams of insects while hunting; this number can go up to 10 tonnes of insects consumed in a single night.
